In Freiburg we are at the southern Black Forest. This area is heavily marketed for tourism. However, the tourists never stray from the main sight, so on Hikes like this one, you will be spared with meeting hoards of people trampling on the same path as you. The three of us went on a documented hike in late summer (August 2000). We caught the train from Freiburg Hbf (main train station) to Hinterzarten, a village, which lies at about 893m...

Path: Hinterzarten to Himmelreich - 12km
Transport:  hourly Train, Bus from Freiburg Hbf to Hinterzarten
Ticket:   daily ticket for DM10,-- valid for one day unlimited travel in the region, valid for 2 adults and 2 children on weekends.
Food:  Restaurants at the end of Ravenna Gorge (Tourist centre) or bring your own, a  bottle of water, musli bars or nuts for quick energy boosts generally recommendable on hikes. For the ones with bigger stomachs, take some sandwiches.
Clothes & Shoes:  Good shoes with proper tread. 
Temperatures: Summer from 10 to 20 degrees Celsius,  Winter -5 to 10 degrees Celsius
